The Disorganized Librarian Emerges from ALA Midwinter!

I really thought I was going to get back on a blogging roll, and then the end of the semester happened. This was my penultimate term and my very last with two classes - as of June, I should have a second BA in the arts with a concentration in photography. Add to that SIX Senior Fairs, an LSTA project, and looming state budget cuts and you've got...a great big stressful mess. Add Notable Books to that and some serious drugs are required.

Ah, ALA Notable Books! The Holy Grail of Adult Services Librarianship! I first became interested in Notables years ago, when my then-supervisor served on the committee. I relished the idea of making a significant contribution both to my profession and for America's readers. Plus, the idea of having endless boxes of free new books delivered straight to my home for my reading pleasure made me swoon. Of course, I never thought I'd be welcomed into the fold.

And now here I am post-Midwinter, waiting for the dark circles under my eyes and the red blotches on my face to disappear, hoping that my leg will someday stop shaking, taking mega-doses of vitamin D to counteract the lack of sun. And desperately wanting the whole thing to begin again as soon as possible.

Yes, I am a book junkie. I am a library committee junkie. For all the times I moan and complain, I love the stress and the arguments and the constant fear that the floor in the rear bedroom will collapse from the weight of the boxes.

So, Notables. Just do it.
